The war was victorious, yet King Boleslaw with his army has been outside of Poland for almost two years, and more and more knights wanted to go back home. When finally they went back some of them found their wifes with newborn babies, too small not to rise suspiction. The King has no doubts and ordered to take the babies from the wifes and give them to the dogs to be breed among them. The bishop of Krakow - Stanisław asked the king to calm down, without any effect.
On contrary his words angered the king, who ordered few knights to kill the bishop.
Three times they went into the church and three times went out not willing, not daring to kill the Saint, who was celebrating the mass at that moment.
Red-faced king took the sword out of the hand of one of the warriors, and hit the bishop in front of the altar.
Sooner after the murder the bethroned king died somewhere abroad, and the bishop became the saint.
As he is the patron saint of Poland ( with saint Wojciech ) his remains are in the Wawel Cathedral,
but the story happened in the church na Skałce ( church on the rock ), where once on the wall believers were able to see the traces of blood of the saint.
We don't know the real story behind the death of bishop Stanisław it happened more than nine hundred years ago,
and temporary documents give different reasons, however the name is still very popular in Poland.
